People naturally gravitate to activities that involve hand to hand competition between two people, and that’s one of the things that makes wrestling games so popular. All types of fighting games in general see success because it’s human nature to want to participate in the most pure type of competition available between individuals. While a lot of people would label these types of activities as violent, these games and the sports that inspire them are not so much about wanting to hurt another person as wanting to test yourself against another human being.
Wrestling games center around big superstars who have been built up to be larger than life. Since the people in these games have a sort of celebrity status, it makes them seem almost indestructible to the players, and this takes away some of the violent implications of the wrestling moves. This type of detachment is what games based on other combat sports are lacking and is the main reason that WWE RAW games outperform games based on kickboxing or other martial arts, even in foreign markets.
Because wrestling games are based on entertainment instead of pure violence, people of all ages can play without having to worry about losing the distinction between what’s real and what’s not. It’s relatively easy for children to understand that what they are seeing in wrestling games is not “real” when compared to games from other genres, and this can give parents some peace of mind if they get worried about the violence in video games. It’s much easier for a child to understand that a man dresses up to play a “good guy” or “bad guy” character than to understand how shooting and killing someone is supposed to be fun.
